Gun Violence Vigil Planned for April 20

Sunday, March 11, 2018 5:22 PM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

We GP is working on building a coalition to collaborate on an April 20th gun violence vigil in GP in solidarity with a national day of action on the 19th anniversary of Columbine. We hope to bring together a diverse group of people around the general principles/ideas of:

1. Coming together as a community to honor all lives lost to gun violence, and especially the lives of all our children (especially acknowledging that while mass school shootings that impact mostly white communities draw attention, black and brown communities have faced/face gun violence disproportionately).

2. Coming together as a community to send a message that we are ready and willing to do more to protect our children, who should not live/ go to school in fear.

3. Coming together as a community in solidarity with the victims, the families and the loved ones of those impacted by gun violence.

The event will be from 6:30-8 p.m. on Friday, April 20 at St. Clare of Montefalco Church on 1401 Whittier Road Grosse Pointe Park MI 48230.

There will be  a candle light vigil, and we know we want to bring as many voices together as we can around the general principles above. We hope coalition parters will be interested in helping to plan an impactful event.

So far GPHW NAACP, Christ Church Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church, GP Democrats, Little Pointers for Diversity have joined us. Areeta From Christ Church Grosse Pointe is working on faith leader/church recruitment. We will be reaching out to all our elected officials, the GPPSS and several other community groups to participate and welcome all to join us in planning and coalition building.

There is also a YOUTH led March for Our Lives event Saturday, March 24th at 11 a.m. in Detroit on the Riverfront in solidarity with the student led event in Florida and across the nation. The lead contact for that event is South student Harry Susalla. Please contact us using our contact form if you'd like to help.
