Many of our neighbors in Detroit and Hamtramck oppose the potential expansion of US Ecology Hazardous Waste facility on Georgia Street in Detroit. One of our WeGP members is preparing a letter to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to support our neighbors in opposing this expansion. You can add your name to this letter. Please send your name and mailing address by noon Friday, April 12, 2019 to MaryGPP5@gmail.com.

Letter that will be sent is below:
Mr. Richard A Conforti, Waste Management and Radiological Protection Division, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality
Dear Mr. Conforti:
We support our neighbors in Detroit and Hamtramck who have called upon the Department to REJECT the proposed US Ecology facility renewal and expansion at 6520 Georgia Street.
This renewal/expansion would continue the pattern of placement of such facilities in low-income communities of color. This is not environmental justice.
We also have concerns with US Ecology’s track record, as reported by The Free Press and others. Prior violations should have raised a red flag. For the health and safety of the public, we believe there should be a thorough evaluation of current soil and water conditions and facility operations, as well as ongoing testing of soil and water.
Thank you for considering our position.
